5 Indian peacekeepers on UN mission killed in South Sudan

NEW DELHI, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The Indian External Affairs Ministry said on Tuesday five Indian army personnel, on a United Nations' mission in South Sudan, were killed in an ambush by local rebels.

"Five peacekeepers from India with UNMISS (United Nations Mission in South Sudan) (were) killed in an ambush in Jonglei," Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin wrote on Twitter.

He wrote that four other Indian soldiers were also wounded in the attack, and arrangements were being made to bring those killed back to India.

UNMISS has been in South Sudan since the country's creation in 2011 to maintain peace and security.

India forms a major part of United Nations peacekeeping forces worldwide and has suffered losses in the past. In 2010, three Indian peacekeepers were killed in Congo.
