DAMASCUS, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said his country has been subject to a two-year-old terrorism plot backed by Arab, regional and Western countries, adding that the political solution can't succeed without drying up the sources of terrorism, according to the state-media.
The president's remarks came in a letter addressing the summit of the BRICS countries on Wednesday, in which he called on those countries to work together in order to stop the violence in Syria and to make the political solution a success.
He said the success of a political solution requires a clear international will to dry up the sources of terrorism and stop its financing and armament.
Assad also called on the BRICS nations to exert all possible efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, which has been caused by the "unjust and illegal" economic sanctions.
The president also expressed willingness to work with the BRICS as a "just force" that seeks to spread peace, security and cooperation between the countries far from the hegemony of the Western powers.
He also hoped that the BRICKS would play an "effective role" to prevent "known countries" from intervening in the affairs of other countries.
The embattled leader's remarks came just one day after the Arab League granted Syria's long-vacant seat to the Western-backed opposition's National Coalition. The move has raised the ire of the Syrian administration, pushing it to accuse the Arab bloc of " legitimizing terrorism."
BRICS is a grouping acronym that refers to the countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, which are all deemed to be at a similar stage of economic development.
