UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has delivered more nearly 456 tons of urgent humanitarian aid by land and air to thousands of civilians displaced in north Darfur in Sudan's Darfur region during the past several days, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said here Monday.

The aid was provided by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the UN Refugee Agency ( UNHCR), Nesirky said at a daily news briefing. "It consists of non- food items such as plastic tarps, sleeping mats, blankets and water purification equipment."

"In addition to logistical support, the Mission has been providing security escorts to humanitarian workers to enable them to carry out their duties," he said, adding the Mission has also been supporting in mediation efforts to reduce the tensions in Jabel Amir.

The current humanitarian situation in the region emerged earlier this month as a result of clashes between the Abbala and Beni Hussein tribes over gold mines in the Jabel Amir area, resulting in a mass displacement of some 70,000 people and more than 100 killed, according to government figures.

In addition to the casualties, the fighting, which reportedly erupted on Jan. 5, resulted in looting, burning of nearby villages, and the displacement of thousands of civilians forced to flee toward Kabkabiya, Saraf Omra and Al Sereif towns.
