TEHRAN, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- A senior Iranian commander said that Iran will test-fire its latest indigenous surface-to-air mid- range missile in the naval drill which started on Friday, Press TV reported.

The new Ra'd (Thunder) missile can strike medium-range aerial targets and will be test-fired during the Iranian navy drills, Rear Admiral Amir Rastegar said.

The Iranian Navy test-fired its first indigenous medium-range anti-radar missile, Mehrab (Altar), during the Velayat 90 naval exercise in December 2011.

On Friday, the Iranian Navy launched a 6-day massive naval drill in its southern waters. The drill, dubbed Velayat 91, or Guardianship 91, will be carried out in the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman, the north of the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, the Iranian navy commander was quoted as saying by Press TV.

In the first day of the drill, a fleet of surface and subsurface vessels were sent to the location of the exercise. The fleet included different classes of heavy and light submarines, missile-launching warships and frigates as well as Alborz and Sabalan destroyers.

The Jamaran destroyer closely monitored the movements of the enemy and sent collected information to the command center, according to the report.
