Parents warned as kids-related accidents swell

(Shanghai Daily)

Doctors have asked parents to keep an eye on their children after two more accidents were reported in the city yesterday.

A two-year-old girl injured her finger when she was playing with an electric juicer at home yesterday morning.

The incident happened about 7am when the boy put his right hand into the juicer and accidentally flipped the switch.

His two fingers were stuck in the juicer, causing comminuted fractures, the Minhang District Children's Hospital said yesterday.

"We were not able to keep the boy's index finger and middle finger," said Dr Ma Ruixue of the orthopedic department of the hospital.

The girl's mother said she was making juice and went into the kitchen for a while when the girl climbed onto the desk and put her finger into the juicer.

The girl tried to imitate what her mother was doing, according to an STV report.

Fractured legs

In another incident, a 13-year-old boy fell from the balcony of his home on the sixth floor and fractured both his legs.

The boy's mother said the boy fell when he looked out of the window to see if it rained in the morning.

"I just left home for work and in a few minutes the accident occurred," the mother told an STV reporter.

The boy is also receiving treatment in the hospital.

Dr Ma said there was an obvious increase in the number of accidents involving children in the city.

"Fractures, falls and injuries relating to machines are common these days," Ma said. "In our department, we usually have 30 beds but now there are 50, and they still can't meet the need."

The number of children making trips to the hospital has increased by 30 percent - from 6,000 to nearly 8,000 every day. With summer vacation, many out-of-town patients also came to see doctors in Shanghai which has better medical resources.

With an increase in patients, the hospital faces a shortage of doctors who have to work for longer hours.
