WELLINGTON, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Scientists warned Monday that two mountains in New Zealand's scenic central North Island are still threatening sudden eruptions or explosions as a result of volcanic activity.
Mount Ruapehu was still showing signs of a heightened level of unrest, according to the government's Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS Science).
"An eruption could occur with little or no warning," said a statement.
Aerial observations showed that Ruapehu's Crater Lake remained quiet with a temperature of about 22 degrees centigrade.
A fortnight ago, GNS Science said Ruapehu was showing signs of an imminent eruption as the temperature beneath Crater Lake reached about 800 degrees centigrade, but weather conditions last week prevented scientists gaining updated gas emissions measurements.
However, seismic activity under the volcano appeared to be quieter than in the early part of November.
