Shaanxi, crossing three climatic zones, exists great meteorological differences between the north and south. Southern Shaanxi is north subtropical climate, the Central Shaanxi Plain and most parts of northern Shaanxi are in the middle temperate climatic zone. Areas along the Great Walls in northern Shaanxi belong to north temperate climate.
Generally speaking, Shaanxi is warm and dry with a little rain in spring, the temperature rises quickly and unstable, days in this season are often windy and dusty; the summer is hot and rainy, droughts occasionally occur; in autumn, it’s cool and humid and the temperature drops rapidly; the winter is cold and dry with low temperature, rain and snow is scarce in this season. The average annual temperature of Shaanxi is 13.7 ℃, decreasing from south to north and from east to west: north 7 ℃ -12 ℃, the Central Shaanxi Plain 12 ℃ -14 ℃, south 14 ℃ -16 ℃. The average temperature of January ranges from -11 ℃ to 3.5 ℃ and 21 ℃ -28 ℃ in July, frost-free period is 160-250 days, the minimum temperature is -32.7 ℃, and the maximum is 42.8 ℃. The average precipitation is 340-1240 mm. There are more rainfalls in the south than the north. The southern Shaanxi is in humid zone, the Central Shaanxi Plain is semi-humid and the northern Shaanxi is semi-arid.
