Currently, Pu'er City possesses 5,600 species of higher plants and 1,500 kinds of animals and preserves approximately 1/3 species of China in its 16 natural reserves, gaining it the honorary title of the palace of the "Animal and Plant Kingdom" in Yunnan Province.

According to Qian Dewei, Mayor of Pu'er City, Pu'er people should protect the environment where they live in the same way as they take care of their eyes, try their best to give the nature greater freedom and the ecological system more space, keep strengthening the self-repair capability of the ecological system and endeavor to build a model for harmonious coexistence between human kind and nature. In protecting biodiversity, Pu'er cherishes each natural creature by establishing the "Elephant Canteen", setting up wildlife aid stations and carrying out the protection program for black crested gibbons, so as to enable Pu'er animals and plants to enjoy the dignity they deserve. Therefore, Pu'er is a paradise not only for human kind, but also for animals, plants and microorganisms.
