There are matters that the United States needs to explain to China: whether its domestic agenda and the polarization of its politics will affect policy towards China, and if so how?; how will the US honor the commitment that it welcomes a strong and prosperous China?; how to ensure that its Asia-Pacific rebalancing does not create the perception that it is an anti-China strategy; how to manage its stance on principles in areas that involve China's core interests .
China, in turn, will explain to the United States: what the "Chinese Dream" means and the opportunities it will bring to Sino-US relations; how will China adhere to the path of peaceful development? Its stance and its views on bilateral, international, and regional "hot issues". China welcomes the U.S. presence in the Asia Pacific, and hopes that the United States will choose to play a constructive role.
Faced with a new set of circumstances, the path along which China and the U.S. will define their new strategic foundations has shifted. The two sides need to confirm that a strategic consensus has been formed, and consolidate it - to build a new win-win cooperative relationship between major powers. Related to this is that together they must work to create unity in the Pacific region, which will directly affect the future destiny of both countries.
China and the United States should not try to change each other. Diversity and tolerance are the way of nature, and mutual learning and respecting diversity should be adopted as the way for the two countries to make progress.
In spite of any challenges and structural contradictions, for all that it will be a long-term process to shape and develop the Sino-US relationship, this meeting will send a clear signal to the world: China and the United States can become partners, and no one has anything to gain from confrontation between the two.
China and the United States are neighbors across the ocean. The vastness of the Pacific will help to build friendships and realize dreams between the two peoples.
