"Cloud Atlas" is based on the 2004 novel of the same title by David Mitchell. It consists of six nested stories taking the audience from the settings of the remote South Pacific in the 19th century to those of a distant, post-apocalyptic future.
The roles and stories are intertwined, carrying the themes of fate, love, karma, nirvana and metempsychosis. It posed a huge challenge for directors Lana and Andy Wachowski, creators of "The Matrix" trilogy, and Tom Tykwer, director of "Run Lola Run," to weave them together. David Mitchell is reportedly very satisfied with the final product.
"Cloud Atlas" will see its Chinese premiere in Beijing next Monday. All three directors will fly in to promote the film and hopefully get a positive reaction from Chinese audiences as it has thus far been met with mixed reviews in western countries. "Cloud Atlas" will hit Chinese screens on Jan. 31, 2012.
