Xu Zhong, Chief Conductor of Shanghai Oriental Symphony Orchestra, said, "From a professional musicians' viewpoint, we think "La Traviata" is one of Verdi's most important operas. And also for Shanghai audiences, this is a very easy opera to appreciate. "
The opera is based on a book and a play, and was first performed in Venice Italy in 1853. A courtesan named Violetta and a nobleman named Alfredo fall in love, but Alfredo's father pressures Violetta to give his son up because of her reputation.
Alfredo believes she no longer loves him. Then she falls ill with tuberculosis and Alfredo's family finally acknowledges her love. The lovers are reunited, but Violetta dies in the end. More than five Verdi operas, performed by local or international companies, are due to be staged in Shanghai this year.
