Commentary: Trilateral meeting at Camp David stokes embers of Cold War

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The leaders of the United States, Japan and South Korea convened at Camp David on Friday to unveil their plans for bolstering military ties while deliberately propagating rhetoric about the so-called "China threat."

Orchestrated under U.S. guidance, the trio is endeavoring to forge a closed and exclusive geopolitical clique under the guise of "security cooperation."

Such a maneuver will inevitably fan the flames of antagonism, compromise the strategic security of other countries and jeopardize regional stability. By sowing seeds of division and intensifying opposition, the meeting represents a perilous gambit that might resurrect the specter of the Cold War.

The United States actively wooing Japan and South Korea is nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing. Rather than considering the security interests of both countries, it is edging them toward a cliff.

If history is any guide, wherever the military tentacles of the United States reach, peace will be elusive. Take a look at what the United States has done in the Middle East and Europe, as well as what it has been doing in the Asia-Pacific region. Washington's evil intent is self-evident.

The so-called "security cooperation" is merely a facade for the United States to exploit the psychological vulnerabilities of certain countries and peddle security anxieties.

Washington's so-called military cooperation with Japan and South Korea, built upon undermining the strategic security of other nations, cannot keep both countries safe. Instead, it will escalate the security risks in the region; ultimately, Japan and South Korea will become the sacrificial lambs.

The United States leaves no stone unturned to forge alliances in the Asia-Pacific region, driven by a desperate bid to salvage its hegemonic power.

In recent years, the United States has been actively hitching regional countries to Washington's so called "Indo-Pacific strategy" bandwagon, marketing the "Indo-Pacific economic framework," bolstering the Five Eyes alliance, cobbling together the QUAD, manipulating NATO to interfere in the Asia-Pacific and coercing regional countries into taking sides. The underlying motive behind these actions is to maintain America's dominance.

The Asia-Pacific region is a fertile ground for development and cooperation, not a battleground for hegemonic powers. Countries in the region are averse to picking sides and casting their lot with any particular faction.

The United States' aggressive push for the so called "Indo-Pacific strategy" is dismantling the well-established architecture of regional cooperation and undermining the hard-earned progress toward peaceful development cultivated by the countries in the region for decades.

Callously disregarding the prevailing pleas of regional nations for peace, development, cooperation and prosperity, Washington's reckless attempts to reverse historical progress will inevitably lead to failure.

Authentic communication and cooperation between nations should focus on enhancing regional prosperity and preserving peace and stability globally. The three leaders partaking in the Camp David meeting ought to be well-versed in this internationally recognized principle.

The United States must abandon its military motivations in the Asia-Pacific area. As for Japan and South Korea, both should refrain from being lackeys of U.S. hegemony, lest they find themselves at loggerheads with most regional nations.
