Chengdu Universiade | Tennis concludes as China's Guo claims women's singles title
CHENGDU, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The tennis competition at the Chengdu Universiade came to a thrilling close on Sunday, with China's Guo Hanyu staging a remarkable comeback to defeat Yang Ya-yi of Chinese Taipei 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the women's singles final.
Guo struggled to find her rhythm initially, allowing Yang to seize the first set. However, Guo gradually regained her form in the second set. In the deciding third, Guo improved even further. With Yang's shot going out, Guo raised her arms in victory amidst the enthusiastic cheers of the spectators.
"I am extremely thrilled. Winning the women's doubles gold medal at the 2019 Napoli Universiade took place in a foreign land. It feels truly different to have it happen in my homeland," said Guo.
The men's singles final faced a rain delay. After five hours, the match resumed, and Switzerland's Henry Von Der Schulenburg defeated Kasidit Samrej of Thailand 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1.
Chinese Taipei's duo of Hsu Yu-hsiou and Wu Fang-hsien won the mixed doubles 7-6 (2), 2-6, 10-6 over China's Jin Yuquan and Tang Qianhui.
