NANNING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The 2nd China Mango Industry Conference was held on Wednesday in Tiandong County of Baise City in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

During the conference, meetings, dialogues and forums were held simultaneously, and a mango price index was released for the first time. More than 300 officials, experts, scholars and mango suppliers from across China attended the conference.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference, Li Shanglan, an official with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said China's mango industry has continued to boom in recent years.

According to Ning Yu, deputy director of the index division of China Economic Information Service, the Xinhua-Baise mango price index will serve as a "wind vane" for the market price of mangoes and provide a new tool for the digital management of the mango industry's development.

Guangxi, being a subtropical region, possesses distinctive geographical and climatic conditions that are conducive to the cultivation of mangoes.

Mangoes cultivated in Baise City benefit from a favorable environment with an abundance of sunlight and warmth.

In 2022, the city cultivated more than 30 varieties of mangoes with a planting area of over 900,000 hectares. The mango yield reached 1.25 million tonnes, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the country's total planting area and output, with a comprehensive output value of 13.4 billion yuan (about 1.86 billion U.S. dollars).

Tiandong County is a vital mango production area in Baise. The mango planting area of the county reached nearly 22,800 hectares, generating an output of 321,000 tonnes in 2022. This year the county is expected to see an output of 360,000 tonnes of mangoes.
