U.S. stocks end mixed ahead of Fed chair testimony

NEW YORK, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Wall Street's major averages finished mixed on Monday as investors awaited testimony by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 40.47 points, or 0.12 percent, to 33,431.44. The S&P 500 added 2.78 points, or 0.07 percent, to 4,048.42. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 13.27 points, or 0.11 percent, to 11,675.74.

Six of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with technology and communication services up 0.53 percent and 0.46 percent, respectively, outpacing the rest. Materials dropped 1.65 percent, the worst-performing group.

Wall Street looked ahead to Powell's semiannual congressional testimony on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Also on investors' radar was the February U.S. employment report slated for release on Friday.

For the trading week ending March 3, the Dow rose 1.75 percent, the S&P 500 climbed 1.9 percent, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq added 2.58 percent.
