As China does its best to alleviate the COVID-19 pandemic that struck 202 countries and regions around the globe, it is hit with stigmatization by others with efforts to politicalize the crisis.
China knows it clearly that no country can address the public health crisis facing mankind alone and an international cooperation is the only way out. Striving to uphold the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, the country spares no effort to facilitate international cooperation in defeating the virus.
In an open, transparent and responsible manner, China continues to share information about the disease with the World Health Organization (WHO) and countries around the world, introducing its experiences of epidemic control, along with solutions and treatment methods without reservation.
Though the country still faces severe challenges at home, it has provided medical assistance for nearly 100 countries and international organizations.
China dispatched medical teams to affected countries, with experts exchanging ideas with their counterparts in over 100 countries through video conferences.
At present, when the whole world is confronted with a shortage of medical materials and pins their hope on China, though Chinese enterprises just resumed work in the midst of COVID-19, they are making every effort to guarantee production at full capacity.
China does this hoping to relieve the suffering of the affected countries, and to also express its gratitude to those who offered help when the disease broke out in the country.
Though the country earned respect and praise from the international community, China’s selfless efforts have been maliciously attacked.
Some described China’s assistance as “Chinese propaganda,” claiming the country is using the assistance to manipulate global public opinion.
It has also been said that China is atoning for its “sins” and eager to dump its supplies in order to offset its excessive production capacity of medical supplies generated amid COVID-19, with some alluding to the quality of the face masks and test kits from China, based on hearsay “evidences.”
Rumors, such as the allegation that the the rapid COVID-19 test kits the Czech Republic ordered from China were not working properly and the Philippines claim that the test kits donated by China had low accuracy, have been clarified or refuted by relevant parties.
These rumors are customary tactics to shift the blame, working to politicalize the pandemic.
While disappointing, these tricks serve as a reminder to China: even the greatest kindness and good deeds can be distorted and belittled by those with ulterior motives.
China must stay prepared for further tricks to come, giving it a stab in the back.
China should act with a sense of responsibility as a major country, but must not neglect those who try to trip it up. The country should neither remain silent, nor flinch away from the smears and attacks. No matter what happens, the country will continue promoting international cooperation on anti-epidemic efforts and safeguarding national dignity with practical actions.
