Chinese woman's English video inspires netizens in fight against coronavirus

A first-time video titled "We Are All Fighters" by a Chinese woman has had a total of over 200 million views on the Internet in just a few days since it went online, inspiring numerous Chinese and foreign netizens to comment on various platforms where the video was posted and forwarded.

The video’s creator, Jessicia Liu, who is from Shenzhen in southern China, said she made the video to bring confidence and hope to everyone battling the virus, and let the world know about China's indomitable fighting spirit and determination to win.

"This is great! I am so inspired!" "My eyes are filled with tears while listening to this video. We shall prevail. Salute all soldiers!" "We are all warriors, China will win!" These were just some of the hundreds of comments that appeared in both Chinese and English below the video, whose most striking quality lies in its simple and powerful message.

“I’m so surprised that the first video I ever made could go viral," said Jessica Liu, who majored in Japanese, but is also proficient in English. Jessica likes to give speeches in English and is engaged in transnational cultural exchanges.

She added, “The reason why I chose to record the video in English is that the spread of the virus knows no borders and is a common challenge facing mankind. This is a time when we must make our voices heard.”

"I hope to bring sunshine and confidence to all and help those who feel depressed in difficult situations to get out of the haze as soon as possible,” Liu said to explain the intention behind her creation.

Since the video was released, many foreigners have contacted Jessica Liu to express their support and praise. “Some of them have never been to China; some of them have lived in China for a long time. But they all love China very much.” 

"What surprised me the most was that many children born after 2000 and 2010 also liked my video. I even heard that some people in their 60s and 70s shared it with their families. I’m so flattered,” Liu said, adding that Chinese people always have hope in the midst of adversity.

Echoing the theme of her video, Liu said, “Our people may get sick; our city may get sick. But we, as a great nation, will never ever get sick. Because we have the spirit, history and determination to win.”

According to Jessica, there were three forces behind the video’s popularity: the power of language, the power of the Internet and the power of the human heart. Liu has always loved English and public speaking, and working in the field of international cultural exchanges for so many years has given her a deep understanding of how to convey this energy directly to people through simple language.

"In the past, I could not have imagined that I could gain so much support in such a short time. Thanks to the Internet, every ordinary person has a voice,” Liu said.
