Big data is expected to help facilitate government services, according to the ongoing China International Big Data Industry Expo, which opened in the city of Guiyang, southwest China's Guizhou Province, on Sunday.
Big data-based government management and public services have become a focus of the big data industry since the country rolled out the Internet Plus Government Services model so that people could access government services more efficiently.
Public big data is made up of data for government services involving various aspects of law enforcement and huge amounts of citizen information, said Peng Changgen, executive deputy director of the national key laboratory of public data in southwest China’s Guizhou Province.
However, relevant government departments were reluctant to share their data, leading to information barriers, Peng added.
China needs to promote better information sharing between government departments to improve government services, said Mei Hong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Specifically, the country must ensure that the whole process of data sharing can be monitored, controlled and traced through effective technology, Mei said, adding that China needs to formulate corresponding standards and specifications, provide highly reliable information sharing platforms for government services and put in place an integrated data governance system, according to Mei.
