A video clip showing two swordsmen dancing in the woods of Longquan in Lishui, east China’s Zhejiang province, recently went viral on Facebook.

Mi Ran from Russia and his teacher, Chinese Zha Changwei, first became acquainted on Zha’s online shop, which specializes in Longquan swords, on China’s major e-commerce platform Taobao.

Zha’s shop, Hezihao, is a time-honored brand with over 100 years of history, and Zha is the third generation inheritor of Longquan sword casting, one of China’s intangible cultural heritages.

As a lover of Chinese Kungfu and martial arts, Mi Ran decided he would like to learn how to cast a sword when he came across Zha’s online shop.

“This young foreigner was pretty special,” said Zha, explaining “I could tell he was enthusiastic about learning the skill, so I said he could study with us."

However, Zha didn’t expect Mi to show up at his door just a few days after their first online conversation.

Though sword casting is time-consuming and takes perseverance, Mi made quick progress in his learning.

Mi, currently a freshman at the Communication University of Zhejiang, travels nearly 1,000 kilometers between Hangzhou and Lishui every week to learn the required techniques.

Aside from uploading Vlogs, Mi plans to help Zha set up an online shop with English and Russian services so more people can learn about the Longquan sword.
