Macron, May to hold Brexit talks in Paris on eve of Brussels summit

PARIS, April 8 (Xinhua) -- French President Emmanuel Macron would receive British Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday evening to further discuss how Britain would leave the European bloc after her failure to make the Brexit deal approved by the parliament, local media reported on Monday.

"The working meeting is scheduled as part of the preparation of the extraordinary European Council meeting over Brexit in Brussels on April 10," local broadcaster Europe1 reported citing a source close to the President's office.

The two leaders would hold talks on Tuesday at 18:00 local time (1600 GMT). That follows her visit to Germany where she will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier in the same day.

Last week, the French president said Britain would have chosen a no-deal exit on its own, if its prime minister would not propose a credible alternative plan backed by the majority by April 10.

Under pressure to find majority support for her deal to leave the European bloc, May had to set out future plans to the EU this week, under the terms given by the bloc for the first Brexit extension which is set to end on April 12.

As no withdrawal agreement has been approved yet by British lawmakers, May asked for a second delay to June 30.

EU leaders will meet on April 10 to decide on whether to give Britain an extension and how long it could be.
