“When Koala Meets Panda” 2018 China-Australia Short Video Contest Awards Announced

SYDNEY, Dec 27 -- Recently, the 2018 China-Australia Short Video Contest announced the winning videos for Individual Awards and the Final Award for this year. By asking youths from Australia and China to upload their stories and perspectives about China on social media platforms, the event aims to enhance the connections between the two countries and promote Australians’ understanding of China and Chinese culture.

Same as last year, the event is hosted by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Brisbane and organized by People’s Daily Online Australia, with supporting partners of Study Queensland, Brisbane City Council, University of Queensland, Queensland University Technology, Griffith University and China National Tourist Office in Sydney.

From September 1 to November 30, 2018, almost 120 entries were received on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Many great stories and experiences were shared in the form of short videos, showing candidates’ understanding and fondness towards China and their active involvement and support for the friendship of the two countries. With assessment performed by professional judges recommended by event supporting partners, 15 videos were finally selected for Outstanding Awards and four Individual Awards was announced after two rounds of scoring and one round of voting.

These four winning productions were then promoted on Weibo and Miaopai, two of the most popular social media platforms in China to compete for the Final Award “Most Popular in China Award”. With 1.09 million views in just around 24 hours, the video “Travel around China” became the final winner and the winning candidate Max will be invited to China for a one-week cultural exchange trip in 2019.

Max is currently studying at Macquarie University in Australia, majoring in International Studies. He has been to many cities in China and has had the opportunity to experience the authentic culture and history in China. “With this video, I want to show the world how amazing a destination China is and particularly encourage more young Australians to experience what China has to offer,” he said.

Dr. Xu Jie, Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Brisbane, also expressed his appreciation to all the supporting partners and candidates. “We will work along with people from all walks of life in Queensland to continue advancing China-Australia and China-Queensland friendship. It is also my sincere wish that more Chinese and Australian young people participate in our contest in the future.”

The awarding ceremony will be held in Brisbane in January 2019, where all winners will be presented with trophies and prize. (People’s Daily Online/ Quanjiao Wang)
