Smart port helps quay crane operators reduce safety risks

(People's Daily Online)    09:29, December 14, 2018

Quay Crane Remote Control is an updated crane control system. Thanks to this update, quay cranes can now be controlled remotely from a control room. The system uses precision scanning, smart deceleration and bump-proof protection to reduce safety risks.

"With this technology, we have implemented the semi-automated movement of containers from the sea to the land,” said Chen Shulin, a crane operator working for Xiamen Container Terminal Group in south China’s Fujian Province.

It also greatly enhances efficiency of crane operations. Chen added that the RC system has reduced 70% of his workload as a crane operator, while improving his work environment by reducing safety risks as well as minimizing negative aspects such as noise and vibration. Thus, more people can consider this career without worrying about health and safety issues.

“In my ten years as a crane operator, I never thought I would be operating a crane like this,” Chen said.
