BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Over the past four years, more than 500 teachers from China and the United Kingdom have participated in an exchange program enabling both sides to learn from each other's math teaching methods, local media reported Tuesday.

Launched in 2014, the UK-China Math Teachers' Exchange and Cooperation Program saw its fifth round kick off this year. A total of 86 math teachers from primary schools in the UK arrived at Shanghai Normal University on Monday for a two-week program, according to a China Daily report.

The program includes research on math education theory, immersive teaching communications, filed trips and experience sharing, said Du Kewei, director general of the Ministry of Education's China Center for International People-to-People Exchanges.

Beside teachers involved in the program, another 12,000 teachers in the UK have learned from demonstrations by the Shanghai teachers, according to Paul Kett, director general for education standards at the UK's Department for Education.

A delegation of 86 Shanghai math teachers from China will visit 43 primary schools in the UK in January.

By 2023, it is estimated that around 11,000 British students will have learned through the East-Asian style of math teaching through the program.
