Moscow authorities battled to clear streets and told children they could skip school, and scores of flights were delayed as the city was blanketed by its heaviest snowfall in 100 years, AFP reported on Monday.

The record heavy snowfall hit Moscow for a second day in a row, leaving one dead and five others injured, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Sunday, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

The mayor said on Twitter that the casualties were caused by fallen trees and damaged power lines due to the meteorological disaster, according to the Xinhua report.

The city hall said that 44 centimetres (17 inches) of snow had fallen between Saturday and Monday morning, or 20 percent more than the average for the whole month and up to 20 centimeters more was expected to fall on Monday with temperatures falling to minus 12 C (10 degrees Fahrenheit), officials warned, said the AFP report.

According to the Sputnik news agency, over 100 flights have been delayed and over 10 were canceled in major airports in Moscow.

"This is the first time in 100 years there's been such a quantity of snow," said deputy mayor Pyotr Biryukov, quoted by Interfax news agency, according to the AFP report.
