Big waste exporters have become worried after China implemented a strict and comprehensive ban on 24 kinds of solid waste at the beginning of this year. However, many foreign internet users say that China is doing the right thing, guancha.cn reported.
French media Le Figaro reported on its website that developed countries have become worried as China has shut the door to waste enforced since the start of this year, saying that the ban has brought lots of trouble to European countries and to the U.S., who have to think of ways to digest their own garbage rather than relying on China as before.
In 2016, China imported 7.3 million tons of plastic waste, accounting for 56 percent of the world’s total plastic waste imports, according to Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Arnaud Brunet, director general of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), a Belgium-based NGO, said the impact of the ban will be “devastating.”
Since the ban was announced last July, many foreign media, including Le Figaro, all said the ban has created shockwaves around the world.
However, many foreign internet users support China’s ban on importing foreign waste, saying that China is doing the right thing.
The internet users commented that “China entirely has the reason to do so,” “It is absolutely not a catastrophe, but a chance for us to develop relevant industry and create employment opportunities,” and, “It is reasonable for China to make the decision, as every country should deal with its own garbage."
