Divorce agreement on 63 houses goes viral, triggers debate on privacy

A divorce agreement on the division of 63 houses went viral, reflecting a need to raise privacy awareness, Beijing News reported on July 5.

Employees in a real estate agency allegedly took photos of the litigants’ private information and shared it online, a violation of both professional ethics and law.

The litigant surnamed Zhang and who lives in Wuhan, Hubei, said she will sue the real estate agency to protect her rights. The agency is suspected to have leaked her private information after she gave them a copy of her divorce certificate and agreement.

Zhang’s privacy was seriously violated, as a divorce decree or agreement is not allowed to be publicized online, according to the Supreme Court. In addition, the houses are legal property, and the recently divorced couple is not involved in any corruption investigation because they are private business owners, not public officials.

The local public security organ said it will handle the investigation of the case and use it as an example for solving similar cases in the future.
