Communist Youth League vows to help unmarried young people

By Du Xiaofei (People's Daily Online)    16:49, May 18, 2017

At a news conference held by the State Council Information Office on May 17, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League said they will work hard to help unmarried young people find significant others.

The issue of unmarried youth was raised by a journalist during the Q&A session after a briefing about the Mid- and Long-Term Development Plan for Youth (2016-2025). He Junke, first secretary of the Secretariat, offered a thoughtful response.

“It is a trend that people are getting married and having babies later than before. Many people graduate in their early twenties and only start to think about settling down and getting married at the age of 25 or 26. Changes in lifestyle and work have also made it harder for young people to socialize. So it’s natural that some still haven’t found their ideal partners,” He said.

To help those who are struggling to find love, He believes there should be three items at the top of the league’s agenda.

First, the league should guide young people to form specific views on marriage and family. Some people nowadays get married for purposes other than love. Old-fashioned thinking about marriage has restricted the choices of young people. Second, the league should work with other organizations to engage young people in social activities. This would help to expand their social circles. Third, the league should coordinate with authorities to standardize dating and matchmaking services and to combat fraud.

“Having said this, marriage is a very personal matter," He acknowledged. "The league can only help to create a favorable social environment and increase the exposure of unmarried young people to others like themselves.”

“We sincerely hope all young people can find their other halves in the end,” he concluded.
