A batch of goods to celebrate the approaching Chinese New Year was sent to a border force unit of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) stationed in the Altai Mountains on Jan. 20.
With the area covered in snow for eight months, the border force unit has spent most of the last year in near-total isolation. As a result, winter supplies have been in short supply for many months. Hoping to give the soldiers stationed there a happy Chinese New Year, authorities decided to send a selection of treats to the dedicated soldiers via helicopter. Three helicopters were deployed for the mission, carrying fish, beef, pork, rice dumplings, seasoning and 17 different kinds of vegetables.
One soldier named Huang Guoying said he even received a sweater woven by his mother. He hopes to earn military merit in the coming year as a present for his mother in 2018. Upon receiving the supplies, all the soldiers in the unit expressed their determination to guard the border for their country and guarantee a safe and happy festival for everyone.
