University claims no liability for campus suicide

Changshu Institute of Technology has announced that it is not liable for the recent suicide of a female student, according to the family of the deceased girl. The student's body was reportededly found naked on the ground beside a dormitory building in the early morning of Oct. 21.

According to an employee of the university, the school informed the student's family immediately after the body was discovered. The university has also set up a special group to work with police, the employee added. However, refusing to answer questions about possible motivation for the suicide, the employee said an official conclusion has yet to be reached by the police.

Already, the girl's family has disputed the university's statement. A family member surnamed Fan explained that the school didn't inform them until nine hours after the body was found. In addition, Fan said the university agreed to negotiate with them, but no one from the school showed up at the scheduled appointment. Later, university security blocked them from entering campus, even shoving the girl's mother to the ground, Fan said.

In a previous conversation, a vice president of the university stressed that the school is free from accountability for the incident. The vice president claimed that the girl's family could file a lawsuit against the school if they wish. When the family questioned the safety measures of the university, the school replied that such measures are designed for the student body as a whole - not individual students.
