On Oct. 15, three male foreigners in Shanghai attempted to enter the subway without tickets. After they were apprehended by a subway employee, the young men proceeded to curse out the employee, who asked them to leave. After a long argument, they finally left the subway.
The incident, which occurred at 11:25 a.m. on Oct. 15, took place at Longhuazhonglu Station. Each of the foreigners carried a bike, which is also prohibited in the subway.
After being caught, the young men at first refused to cooperate, saying they couldn't understand Chinese. The subway employee then spoke to them in English, reminding them to obey the rules. However, the three became agitated and started to yell. They finally left the station after a fellow passenger got involved, criticizing the foreigners in English.
Though the foreigners were let off with a warning this time, fare dodgers in the Shanghai subway can be fined up to five times the maxiumum ticket price. They can also be assigned legal responsibility if they refuse to cooperate and cause public disorder.
