As the Olympic Games are to be kicked off in just a little over 24 hours, there are incessant reports that continue to raise the concerns of the living condition inside of the Olympic village in Rio de Janeiro.

Apart from the safety concerns, many Olympic athletes complained about the hygiene issues, the sufficiency of the necessities offered in the Olympic Village, and more importantly, the Zika virus.

People’s Daily’s reporter has visited the village and found that the environment and condition there are not that bad as some media reports previously pictured.

For example, some athletes have complained about the size of the mattress being so small that those who are relatively stout are forced to squeeze and curl themselves into the beds. However, the standard size of each mattress has been enlarged from 2-meter long to 2.3-meter long since the London Olympics. And all the mattresses now have unique design that allows mattresses to link together so to lengthen the size.

Apart from the mattress, there have been complaints on the lack of utilities in athletes’ rooms such as water and electricity shortage. However, Olympic athlete jack Rossetti told People’s Daily reporter that the facilities in the village are in fact quite complete. “We still don’t have hot water in the bathroom. Perhaps Brazilians do not find this necessary. But other than that, everything is solved. And we can see that Brazil is working hard to solve this hot water issue. We are enjoying the stay here.”

And of course, the issue of Zika virus remains as one of the key concerns in this Olympics-host city. Based on People’s Daily reporter’s observation in the village, it is apparent that the organization has taken cautious and thorough measures to ensure all athletes have a safe stay here.

“When we first arrived here, we could already see that the organization has prepared a lot of mosquito repellents. That’s very thoughtful,” said Australia fitness trainer Gregory Variks. “Our staying has been great so far. Everything is smooth. And the environment is incredible. I haven’t seen mosquito here. I am sure those athletes who have declined to come to Rio because of the Zika fear will regret of losing the opportunity of seeing such a beautiful city,” he said.
