Celebrities caught using illegal drugs will face a three-year ban on working for television, film and radio programs in Shanghai, according to the city's new drug control regulations.

The regulations, which came into effect Friday, state clearly that companies should not invite anyone convicted of drug-related crimes, or have undergone drug rehabilitation within the last three years, to take part in their shows. Those who flout the ban could be fined up to 200,000 yuan.

China has seen a growing number of celebrity drug users, including actors Jaycee Chan and Ko Chen-tung, who were considered idols by Chinese teenagers.

The new regulations also mandate postal delivery services to be real-name-based in order to tighten up controls on illegal drugs.

The municipal regulations also state that people found using drugs in the past three years will be banned from driving.
