Concern from foreign countries about China's military expansion in Djibouti are absolutely unnecessary, as the facilities China is planning will be used mainly for rest and replenishment when the Chinese navy performs tasks in the vicinity of the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters, said Yang Yujun, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense.
Yang addressed reporters at a press conference on March 31, attempting to ease concerns over China's confirmation that it would build new facilities in Djibouti.
The new facilities will also help China to better carry out its international obligations and protect its own legal interests, added Yang.
Since 2008, China has dispatched 22 naval fleets and carried out more than 60 escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters.
"During the missions, we have faced some difficulties in offering soldiers sufficient rest, food and fuel. Ship maintenance has also been a challenge. Therefore, the new facilities are necessary to improve conditions for our soldiers," Yang said.
