China devotes more efforts to combating terrorism by law

By Peng Bo (People's Daily)    10:30, March 06, 2016

As both China and the rest of the world are plagued by the increasing threat from terrorism, China is devoting more efforts to fighting terrorism by law.

The new counter-terrorism law launched by China is one of such efforts that brings the country’s anti-terror campaign to a new stage.

Today’s world is facing an unprecedented wave of terror threats, causing suffering in many countries and regions.

Those attacks, including the gunshots in France’s Bataclan concert hall and suicide bombs on the Iraqi streets, have vandalized the world and challenged the bottom line of human civilization.

China has also fallen a victim to terrorism. The terrorist attacks against China claimed many innocent lives and caused economic losses, giving rise to social divisions and tensions.

Such attacks include riots hitting Lhasa, capital of Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, in 2008, the violent terror attack at the Kunming Railway Station in 2014, and the violent terrorist incidents in Urumqi in 2014.

Given the backdrop, terrorism has become the mankind’s enemy standing in the way of world peace. All countries on the planet including China should eradicate this tumor.

In a bid to strike against such brutal acts, China adopted its first counter-terrorism law.

The law that took effect on the first day of this year stipulates in its first article that the law is introduced to fight terrorism, safeguard national security and personal and property rights, as well as prevent and punish terrorist activities.

The enactment of the law shows China’s firm determination to fight terrorism and maintain security. It not only meets the urgent demands, but also reflects China’s courage to shoulder international responsibility.

It took China 10 years to finalize the law after the country began to draft it in 2005.

During the decade, the terrorists stretched their reach. In today’s globalized world, the terrorist forces in China will also bring disaster to other parts of the world.

The enactment of the anti-terrorism law by China represents a new stage in China’s anti-terror drive. A law-based anti-terror campaign is expected to be a sharp weapon against terrorists.
