The 2015 Hurun Chinese Luxury Consumer Survey, released by the Hurun Research Institute, shows that even though expenditure on luxury gifts has seen a double-digit drop in the past few years, consumption of luxury gifts increased in 2015.

By interviewing 458 Mainland Chinese millionaires (defined as individuals with personal wealth of renminbi 10 million—equivalent to USD 1.6 million—or more), Hurun Research discovered that men purchasing luxury items have increased by 15 percent since 2014, and the rate of women purchasing luxury items has increased 24 percent. According to the 2014 survey, there was a 30 percent drop in luxury consumption in past years. Looking at this year’s numbers, luxury consumption in China seems to be showing signs of a rebound.

In 2014, Apple products ranked as the most preferred gift for both men and women. In 2015, though they still ranked as the top choice for men, Apple dropped to third place for women. For women, Chanel regained its first place throne, followed by Louis Vuitton. Louis Vuitton and Gucci ranked second and third on the men’s list.

In the report, interviewees under 30 are the major consumers of daily luxuries and tourism, while those aged 30 and above spend the most on children’s education. China’s Sanya remains the first choice domestic destination for vacations.

With regards to international tourist destinations, France replaced Australia as the top vacation destination. Due to its ten-year visa policy, the United States rose from seventh in 2014 to second this year. The Maldives kept its position in third. The advantage in currency exchange between RMB and yen contributed to Japan’s fourth-place ranking this year, up from ninth. Europe is still a preferred destination for wealthy Chinese people.
