(ECNS) -- Some freshmen at Minzu University of China were recently asked for gene samples, according to Beijing News.

Each was asked to fill out a document of consent during physical examination of freshmen, including postgraduates, which involved the supply of both blood and urine samples.

A student surnamed Zhang, said: "I think DNA is private. I wonder whether it would violate individual privacy rights if the college passed our information on to other institutions. I even doubt its legality."

An unnamed worker with the hospital said it was totally legal and wouldn't violate any rights, adding that sampling was part of 863 Program, a national high-tech research initiative.

"Though we encourage students to contribute to national research, giving samples is non-compulsory," it was noted.

863 Program, or National High-tech R&D Program, is a government-funded venture intended to accelerate the development of advanced technologies.
