Foreign media focus on China's V-Day parade

BEIJING, Sept. 2 -- As autumn rainfalls wash clear the Beijing sky, foreign media have all adjusted their cameras towards Tian'anmen Square, awaiting the V-Day parade to be unveiled Thursday, for which the city has got everything prepared.

Foreign media have paid high attention to the gala ever since China officially announced its plan. Below is a digest of their reports that indicate what aspects of the upcoming event concern them most.

Some media emphasized the contributions China made in WWII.

The Wall Street Journal acknowledged China's earlier participation in the World Anti-Fascist War than the Allied Forces in the West, underscoring the fact that tens of thousands of Japanese troops had launched an all-out aggression against China in 1937.

It said in addition to commemorating the victory over Japan, another goal of the parade is to show the world the Chinese people's tremendous sacrifice in as well as significant contribution to the World Anti-Fascist War.

"This parade is a significant opportunity for the world to better understand the huge contribution Chinese forces made to the ultimate defeat of Japan in 1945," BBC reported in an article, adding that "when war broke out in Europe in 1939, China had already witnessed Japanese aggression on its own soil for eight years and had been invaded two years earlier."

Singapore's Zaobao, a daily newspaper in Chinese, reported that the parade is a grand exhibition showcasing China's comprehensive national strength and the leadership's achievements in governing the party, the nation and the army, and that it has significant implications for consolidating internal consensus and solidarity.

"China's military parade to commemorate the end of World War II presents to the world a major view of global history from the Asian perspective radically different from the West's, or Anglo-American narrative," Russia's news agency Sputnik reported.
