As a citizen of Beijing, I always wonder what makes a city with a history of more than 3,000 years and a capital of more than 860 years to be full of life? The answer may lie in its character of inclusiveness, which has attracted lots of migrates from the country and even around the world to the city. To bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics is one latest expression of this vitality.
It still occurs to me that in 1990s, Beijing held the Asian Games. On the opening ceremony, famous singers Liu Huan and Wei Wei were singing: “In Asia, the mountains are our raised heads; In Asia, clouds are holding hands…”
In 2008, Beijing provided the world a green, scientific and humanistic Olympic Games, which well-embodies the spirits of mélange, unity, inclusiveness and coexistence.
Right now, along with Zhangjiakou, Beijing is bidding for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, indicating the great changes and leaps-forward considering Chinese people’s ideas on sports. Our focus and understanding of the Olympic Games used to be limited by winning honor for the country, currently our focuses have diversified.
The three main ideas of bidding for the 2022 Games is “athletes-centered, sustainable development and economical holding.” Among the three concepts, I care about economical holding the most. Admittedly, holding games costs money, especially when it comes to top sport event like the Olympic Winter Games. To spend money on the most important things is the correct way to be economical, Beijing gives a lesson to a lot of people on this.
How so? With the development of the economy, many people become wealthy, material condition does not tie people up anymore, wasting happens in lives from time to time. Sport conveys a lifestyle of economical and energy conserving, which, from this point of view, “economic holding” is not only a contribution to the Olympic Games, but also a good lesson for nationals.
The result of the host city for 2022 Olympic Winter Games will be an-nounced on July 31. Just like the game itself, process of the bidding rather than the result is the thing that matters the most. We spend least money to do the biggest and best things, which not only gives the society positive energy, but also deepens the idea of sports. We already won in this sense. Therefore, no matter what is the result, the process of bidding already promotes the seek for healthy and positive lifestyle for the whole nation.
The future consumption in sport creates an immense market in China. Bidding for Olympic Winter Games can motivate the society to put more efforts in sport and culture arenas, which will certainly benefits a lot. (The author is a famous Chinese sports commentator and senior sports critic)
