The defense lawyer of Lin Senhao, a medical student at Fudan University who was sentenced to death for poisoning his roommate, claimed on Thursday that the victim might have died from drug allergies.

The lawyer Xie Tongxiang submitted seven application letters to the Supreme People's Court on Thursday, requiring a re-examination of the cause of death of the victim, Huang Yang.

The top court has accepted the documents and said they would be evaluated.

The Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court convicted Lin of intentional homicide during the first trial and sentenced him to death in February 2014.

Lin was accused of dropping a deadly chemical into a water dispenser in April 2013 which led to the death of his roommate Huang Yang.

Lin insisted that his motivation was that he wanted to play a trick during April Fool's day.
