BEIJING, June 15 -- President of China Law Society Wang Lequan on Monday said Hong Kong's democratic development could only be realized by safeguarding the authority of the Constitution and the Basic Law.

Observing the Constitution and the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) was also key to ensuring the"one country, two systems" policy in the SAR, Wang said at an event for law school students from universities in both mainland and the SAR.

Hong Kong is scheduled to submit a plan for the 2017 leader election to the SAR Legislative Council (LegCo) for a vote on June 17.

The State Council Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office said in April that the plan not only conforms to the Basic Law and the decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), but also suits the region's reality and takes account of all walks of Hong Kong society.

Wang said he hoped the law society in Hong Kong would take the opportunity and contribute to the prosperity and democratic development of the SAR.

The exchange event was organized annually by the China Law Society, the Ministry of Education and the Hong Kong Foundation for Legal Studies.
