BEIJING, June 15 -- Beijing Olympic diving champion He Chong will not take part in the upcoming Swimming World Championships, Chinese diving team leader Zhou Jihong said on Monday.
Zhou announced China's diving squad for the Kazan Worlds on Monday, and He was not included because of his poor performance at the two qualification competitions.
He Chao, He Chong's brother, will compete in the men's three-meter springboard with Cao Yuan. He Chao will also take part in the men's 1m springboard with Xie Siyi.
"I feel sorry for He Chong," Zhou said. "But our selection is mainly based on the results from the two qualifiers."
"He Chong is a good diver and he has achieved many glories. He got married and is a father now. As a veteran diver, he needs to put more effort on training if he wants to win the national trials," Zhou added.
Two-time women's 10m platform Olympic champion Chen Ruolin will only take part in the synchro 10m platform in Kazan as she also underperformed in the singles events in the two trials.
Ren Qian and Liu Huixia will compete in the women's 10m platform and Chen will pair up with Liu to participate in the synchro platform event.
The Kazan Worlds will run from June 24 to August 9.
