In 2014, China exported 10171 items of copyright, representing a year-on-year increase of 95 items, according to the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television. The agency also showed that compared with 2013, the ratio of import copyright to export copyright in 2014 slipped from 1.76∶1 to 1.66:1.China sees contiuned narrowing in copyright trade deficit.
Leading American and European publishing houses are buying the copyright of high-quality books on China's reform and opening-up policies, such as Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, and What History Tells: the Success of the Communist Party of China (《历史的轨迹:中国共产党为什么能》). According to incomplete statistics, Xi Jinping: The Governance of China has now been published in several languages and more than 70 thousand copies have been distributed in foreign countries. The copyright royalties of What History Tells: the Success of the Communist Party of China have reached 40 thousand euros. With sales of more than 20 thousand English-language copies in foreign countries, the revenues of China New Long March (《中国—新长征》) have reached 1.6 million U.S. dollars.
There are now more than 300 Chinese publishing houses with overseas branches. They have also bought up several leading foreign publishing houses. In 2014, the Phoenix Publishing & Media Group acquired an American children's book publisher for 85 million U.S. dollars , the largest cross-border acquisition in the history of the publishing industry in China.
Strong support from the Chinese authorities is adding impetus to the export of Chinese books. Through China Book International project, foreign publishing houses can apply for a translation allowance if they experience difficulties in translating Chinese books. Chinese publishing houses can apply for loans when they need financial support for overseas investment, according to China's key press and publications enterprises overseas development support projects. With the China publications international retail channel expansion projects, Chinese publishing houses can find help when they are confronted with problems in the distribution of Chinese books in foreign countries.
