BEIJING, March 28 -- Sustainable development, economical Games and athletes-centered Games are the key phrases in Beijing's bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
These three concepts comply with the International Olympic Committee(IOC)'s 40-point reform package which was approved at the 127th IOC Session last December, and the IOC Evaluation Commission who are visiting Beijing and its co-bidder Zhangjiakou will definitely feel about it.
The 40 recommendations that make up the Olympic Agenda 2020 have drawn a road map for the Olympic movement in 15 years.
If Beijing wins the bid, China will have another chance to further contribute to the Olympic movement after hosting the "truly exceptional" Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Among the 40 resolutions, there are eye-catching ones on reducing the cost of bidding for and hosting the Games. The reforms also include a call for sustainability in all aspects of the Olympic Games and expect candidate cities to present a project that fits their sporting, economic, social and environmental needs.
The Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games Bid Committee pay high attention to complying with these reforms, and IOC President Thomas Bach has already given them a thumbs-up.
Beijing views that the Olympic Winter Games are not only a significant international sports event, but also a valuable opportunity to speed up the development of the host cities, the region around them and even the country.
The Chinese national government and the local governments in Beijing and Zhangjiakou have included Beijing 2022 in the National Strategy of Integrated and Coordinated Development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region (National Strategy), and the long-term regional development plans, thereby facilitating the bidding and preparation for the Olympic Winter Games, the improvement of urban ecological environments and the close integration of economic development and social advancement.
Needless to say, city development will provide a strong backing for the hosting of the Winter Olympics, which will in return expedite the city development, thus establishing a model of mutual benefit and win-win development of the Olympic movement and the host cities.
Moreover, Beijing stresses an economical Games. The Bid Committee has adhered to the principles of being scientific, meticulous, prudent and feasible in the budgeting for the Games.
Emphases will be placed on integrating the Games with regional development strategy, conducting market-based fund raising, improving internal management system, and exercising strict cost control over the Games operations.
Out of the 12 competition and non-competition venues in Beijing, 11 are existing venues inherited from the Beijing 2008 Olympics. New venues will be built in line with the requirements of the Olympic Winter Games competitions, and temporary facilities and combination of permanent and temporary venues will be used wherever possible.
The 2022 Olympic Winter Games, if held in China, will not only ignite the enthusiasm of 1.3 billion Chinese for winter sports, but also become an opportunity for the world's most populous nation to make new contributions to the Olympic movement and human civilization.
As a Chinese saying goes, "give China a chance and China will give the world a miracle in return."
