BEIJING, March 14 -- The fatal bombing incident on the Chinese side of the China-Myanmar border by a Myanmar warplane on Friday has made it all the more imperative for Myanmar to honor its commitment to safeguarding peace and security on the border area to avoid a spillover of its war fire.
On Friday afternoon, four people working in a sugarcane field were killed by a bomb dropped by a Myanmar warplane in China's southwestern Yunnan Province and nine others were injured.
The incident, which occurred after a stray bomb damaged a civilian residence in Yunnan on Sunday, is condemnable.
The Myanmar government should thoroughly investigate the case, punish the perpetrator, and appropriately handle the aftermath.
It should also take effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and safeguard the security and stability on the China-Myanmar border.
It is well-known that stability in the border area between China and Myanmar as well as in the northern part of the southeast Asian country serves the common interests of the two friendly neighbors which share not only a borderline of 2000 km, but also weal and woe.
Since the Myanmar crisis broke out, China has provided sheltering for Myanmar refugees flocking to Yunnan with necessary relief and temporary settlements, which is appreciated by the Myanmar government.
China has always insisted that the conflict in northern Myanmar be the country's internal affair and the Chinese side has always respected Myanmar's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
As a country that adheres to the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs, China hopes the conflict can be resolved peacefully as soon as possible.
The Myanmar government, as President U Thein Sein put it, is committed to facilitating a negotiated end to the armed violence, promoting economic development and building a better future for the Myanmar people.
As a traditional friend dedicated to advancing the China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership, China will continue to communicate and cooperate with Myanmar, so as to jointly ensure tranquility in the two countries' border area and safeguard the safety of both peoples.
