Accident kills one, injures another at int'l women's cycling

HO CHI MINH CITY, March 2 -- An accident occurred on Sunday during the on-going Binh Duong International Women's Cycling Tournament in southern Vietnam, killing one man and injuring another, both from the escort team for the cyclists, local media reported Monday.

The accident happened in southern Dong Nai province, where cyclists would start their second leg of the race, between riders of the escort motorbike team and another large-volume motorbike group riding from the opposite direction on the road.

The clash killed one escort man on the way to hospital, and broke another escort man's leg, Ngo Quang Vinh, vice president of the Vietnam Motorbike Federation told local VN Express.

Binh Duong International Women's Cycling Tournament (Biwase Cup) 2015, the fifth of this kind ever held in southern Vietnam, kicked off on Feb. 28 in Binh Duong province, attracting 63 cyclists from 11 teams, including two foreign teams from Thailand and Kazakhstan.

The 82km second leg of the tournament started on Sunday, from La Nga in Dong Nai province to Bao Loc in the Central Highlands. To arrive the starting point, cyclists, coaches and logistic staff had to move from Binh Duong province by vehicles, under the escort of a motorbike team.

The accident took place near La Nga starting point with the escort men, however later cyclists all completed their race.

The tournament is scheduled to last till March 8, during which cyclists will compete in nine different races with total length of over 700km.
