This coming March will mark the 50th anniversary of the completion of the drinking water supply project from the Chinese mainland for Hong Kong.

Over 50 years, the Dongshen water project has provided Hong Kong with over 20 billion cubic meters of fresh water.

It supplies water via the Dongjiang River, with its source originating from Xunwu County of east China's Jiangxi province, and passes through cities of Dongguan and Shenzhen in Guangdong province.

After purification in a factory in Shenzhen, huge amount of clean water is transported to Hong Kong residents each day.

The Chinese mainland has taken great pains in assuring the high quality of the water in the project. The water providing capacity of the project has been increased to around 2.4 billion cubic meters annually.

Every year, it supplies up to 1.1 billion cubic meters of water to Hong Kong.
