San Francisco, Nov. 18, (People's Daily Online)--Oakland warned its people Tuesday to prepare for possible violence if the Missouri grand jury announces its decision over Ferguson shooting.

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan wrote in a letter to residents and business owners today, “Although we don’t anticipate problems to occur, keeping peace on our streets and protecting the safety of Oakland residents and business is our top priority and we will be prepared.”

She also suggested that anyone living or working downtown should park in a secure, off-street location, move trash cans to a secure site, double check locks and security cameras.

A Missouri grand jury will be deciding whether Ferguson police officer, Darren Wilson, a white man, will be charged in the fatal Aug. 9 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, a black man. The decision is expected this month, and although it is unknown when it will be made. Missouri Governor declared a 30-day state of emergency this week in anticipation of possible violence in the wake of the decision.

Not only the local activists are waiting for the decision of the case, “40-plus cities are going to be in solidarity with people in Ferguson," ABC quoted one activist leader as saying.

The latest statistics show that the population of black or African American in Oakland is 109,471, accounting for 34.5 percent of its total population. The case in Ferguson has been a focus throughout the nation, including Oakland.

And Oakland ranks as No. 1 in California when it comes to violent crime alone. Last year, 90 murders happened in Oakland and 2,000 violent crimes occurred per 100,000 people, which makes it the most “crime-ridden” city in the Golden State.

According to an annual report compiled by the FBI this month, Oakland was named the fourth-most-dangerous city in the US. The data show that one in fifth of residents there are in poor situation.
