BEIJING, May 28 -- A Chinese mainland spokesman on Wednesday reiterated the mainland's positive attitude toward a possible meeting between leaders across the Taiwan Strait, while noting there is no need to realize such a meeting during international events.

"The meeting between leaders from the two sides is our own business," said Ma Xiaoguang of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office at a press conference.

The mainland has always pushed for such meetings, the spokesman said.

He was responding to a question on Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou's recent remarks on hopes to arrange such a meeting during the upcoming meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Beijing.

"The two sides are of the same family, thus meetings and frequent exchanges between cross-Strait leaders to talk about peaceful development and national rejuvenation will benefit compatriots from both sides," he said.
