BEIJING, May 21  -- Justin Gatlin of the United States and Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica claimed the title in men's and women's 100m race respectively, while four Chinese athletes topped the podium at the 2014 IAAF World Challenge Beijing Meet on Wednesday.

"Tonight was a good night for myself performance-wise. I came a whole hour early, so I kind of wait and stay warm for my body," said Gatlin.

"My coach told me just to stay calm and keep focus. Then I went out to win the race and technically do the job," he added.

Gatlin cruised to victory in 9.87 seconds, the world leading time of the 2014 season. His compatriot Michael Rodgers took silver in 10.03, and Kim Collins from Saint Kitts and Nevis came third in 10.11.

The 32-year-old Gatlin won men's 100m in 9.92 seconds at the 2014 Diamond League Shanghai meet last Sunday.

Chinese stars Zhang Peimeng and Su Bingtian missed the podium and finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.

"It's an honor to be back here. I'm satisfied with my performacne tonight, though it's a little bit away from my best last year, given my insufficient preparation for this tournament," said Zhang.

Earlier, Campbell-Brown, the two-time Olympic champions in 200 meters, won the women's 100m race in 11.14 seconds.

Chinese hurdler Xie Wenjun claimed his second IAAF event title in less than a week when he clocked a fastest time of 13.31 seconds in the men's 110m hurdlesy.

The 23-year-old Xie won his first Diamond League race in Shanghai last Sunday, in personal best time _ 13.28.

"Today's result is not as good as I expected. As you all know, I just finished the race in Shanghai and came here in a hurry, I think, the fatigue affected me," said Xie.

With Olympic champion Liu Xiang still battling to recover from his foot injury, Xie is widely considered the next hope of Chinese athletics.

"I hope to keep improving my skills so that I can compete with the top athletes in the bigger stage," added Xie, who reached the semi-finals of the 110m hurdles in the London Olympic Games in 2012.

China's Wang Zheng won the women's hammer throw with a throw of 75.23 meters, yet still more than two meters shy of her personal best _ 77.68m.

In men's pole vaulte, Xue Changrui bettered China's national record with 5.80 meters to clinch victory, while 18-year-old Wang Jianan won the men's long jump with a leap of 8.09 meters.

In other events, Croatian Ana Simic was crowned women's high jump champion by clearing 1.98 meters. Funmi Jimoh from the United States won the women's long jump in 6.56 meters, and Brianna Rollins of the United States claimed the title in women's 100m hurdles in 12.58 seconds.
