BRICS development bank approves $1.4B loans to China, India, and Russia

(People's Daily Online)    14:57, August 31, 2017

The New Development Bank (NDB) announced on late Wednesday the approval of $1.4 billion loans to fund four projects in China, India, and Russia.

China obtained around $470 million from the latest approval. The loan will be used on river control measures, such as flood prevention and water quality improvement for the Xiangjiang River, the main river flowing through central China’s Hunan province, and a carbon-reduction program in the country’s eastern province of Jiangxi. China has a total of four NDB-funded programs to date.

India also received a $470 million loan, which is expected to bring clean water to over 3 million in 3,000 villages, while about $460 million will be used to help update Russia’s justice system.

The loans will be injected to bolster the sustainable development of the applicants, and are in line with growth path of members and bank policies, said the NDB President K.V. Kamath.

The bank will continue to support the projects that benefit people’s livelihood in BRICS countries, Kamath added.

Headquartered in China’s financial hub Shanghai, NDB opened in 2014 to finance mainly green energy and infrastructure projects in BRICS countries.
